Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) CSIR NET Life Science Exam

The CSIR NET (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research - National Eligibility Test) for Life Sciences is a national-level exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and University Grants Commission (UGC) to determine eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Lectureship in the field of Life Sciences.
Candidates must have an M.Sc. or an equivalent degree in Life Sciences with a minimum of 55% marks for general and OBC categories (50% for SC/ST/PwD) to be eligible for JRF or Lectureship.
The exam is conducted in two sessions - Part A, Part B, and Part C. Part A is common for all subjects, while Part B and Part C assess subject-specific knowledge.
Part A consists of 20 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) based on General Aptitude. Part B contains 50 MCQs based on the subject chosen, and Part C has 75 MCQs that are more analytical and require in-depth knowledge.
The syllabus includes Cell Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, Biochemistry, Physiology, Ecology, Evolution, and other relevant subjects.
Develop a comprehensive study plan, focus on understanding concepts, practice previous years' papers, solve sample papers, and utilize standard reference books for each subject.
Part A and Part B questions carry 2 marks each, while Part C questions carry 4. Negative marking of 25% of the marks assigned to the question is applicable for incorrect answers.
For JRF, the maximum age limit is 28 years (relaxable by 5 years for SC/ST/OBC/PwD/Women candidates). No upper age limit applies for Lectureship.
