Greetings and regards from Bansal Academy! Thank you for reaching out with your question about choosing between CSIR, GATE, ICMR, or DBT fellowships.
Each fellowship has its own distinct features and is associated with specific fields of study. Let me provide you with a brief overview of each:
CSIR Fellowship Benefits:
- CSIR qualifying candidates can take advantage of other benefits, too, apart from earning the scholarship amount. They are not required to pay any income tax during their fellowship tenure. They can also use this stipend to advance their research activities. CSIR also provides an opportunity to travel, called ‘Travel Assistance’, to some deserving research scholars working in an academic or research institution in India to participate in conferences, symposia, etc., held internationally.
ICMR Fellowship Benefits:
- These JRFs are permitted to complete a PhD while working on the project. The validity of the result is two years for placement in ICMR funded projects for this category. The validity is only for one year, and the tenure is only for two years.
- On the other hand, ICMR fellowship opens up the opportunity for those students who specifically wish to work in the medical research field, such as the study of diseases, causative agents, their spread or epidemiology, basically in the field of Biomedical Sciences.
DBT Fellowship Benefits:
- DBT JRF has 2 categories of fellowships. The first category offers 275 fellowships which are tenable in any research institution or university. Under the second category, a merit list of 100 students is published, eligible to join any of the DBT funded external projects in the country. However, DBT does not provide fellowships to these students. They have to avail themselves of the fellowship from the project that they are working on. Some institutions projects may not even allow the candidate to register for a PhD. This is distinct from the 1st category, where the student has to register for PhD to avail of the fellowship mandatorily.
GATE Fellowship Benefits:
- A stipend of ₹28,000 per month is provided for the 1st year and the next 4 years, ₹30,000 per month for regular PhD students. The stipends generally depend on the type of PhD program you are enrolled in, i.e., regular/part-time/sponsored/Research Interns, etc.
Choosing the Right Fellowship:
- Consider your research interests and the specific field of study.
- Research the eligibility criteria, benefits, and opportunities associated with each fellowship.
- Assess the institutions and research centers where these fellowships are applicable.
