Basic Facts about CSIR NET (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – National Eligibility Test):

1. Purpose: CSIR NET is conducted to determine eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Lectureship/Assistant Professorship in the field of Science and Technology.
2. Conducting Body: The exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Government of India.
3. Frequency: CSIR NET is conducted twice a year, generally in June and December.
4. Subjects: The exam is conducted for five subjects:
   • Chemical Sciences
   • Earth Sciences
   • Life Sciences
   • Mathematical Sciences
   • Physical Sciences
5. Eligibility: Candidates must have completed or be pursuing a Master’s degree or equivalent in the relevant subject with a minimum of 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/PWD/OBC-NCL).
6. Age Limit: For JRF, the maximum age limit is 28 years (relaxation as per government norms). No upper age limit for Lectureship.
7. Exam Pattern: The exam consists of a single paper with Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). The duration of the exam is 3 hours.
8. Selection Criteria:
   • For JRF: Candidates need to qualify for JRF to receive fellowship support for research.
   • For Lectureship: Candidates qualifying for Lectureship can apply for teaching positions in universities and colleges.
9. Validity: The validity of the JRF award is initially for two years. However, it can be extended based on performance and fulfillment of criteria.
10. Examination Centers: CSIR NET is conducted at various centers across India.
